MCA Detroit proudly recognized William James, Sr. with the Industry Stewardship Commendation during its annual celebration, honoring a career that has profoundly shaped the region’s mechanical and plumbing industry.

As President of the MCA Detroit Board of Directors, Randy Pagel highlighted the significance of the recognition, noting that the award reflects “the very heart of what strengthens our industry.” Reserved for individuals whose careers demonstrate exceptional leadership, mentorship, and long‑standing commitment, the commendation celebrates contributions that elevate both people and organizations.
James’ influence has been felt across every level of the industry — from the field to the boardroom. His guidance has supported contractors, strengthened MCA Detroit, and helped raise the standards and expectations of the broader mechanical and plumbing community.
James began his career in February 1966 as an apprentice with Plumbers Local 98, later becoming a journeyman and master plumber. He went on to establish Bill James Plumbing, a company remembered for decades of service to families, businesses, and community institutions across Southeast Michigan. His work built not only projects, but enduring relationships throughout the industry.
Following the sale of his company, James continued to serve the industry as an Industry Advisor to MCA Detroit. In this role, he has contributed to trust fund governance, supported labor‑management relations, guided industry development initiatives, and played a key role in the renovation of MCA Detroit’s new Association headquarters. His steady presence and deep institutional knowledge have made him a trusted mentor and resource to contractors and industry leaders alike.
“Everywhere you go, someone knows Bill — and more importantly, they have a story about how he helped them or encouraged them,” Johnson said. “His legacy isn’t just in the work he’s done. It’s in the people he’s lifted along the way.”
The plaque presented to James reads:
