Detroit JATCs Expand Training Capacity to Address Regional Manpower Shortages
Detroit, MI — In response to accelerating regional construction and service demands, the Plumbers and Pipefitters Joint Apprenticeship Training Committees (JATCs) have taken decisive action to expand training capacity and strengthen the skilled‑trades pipeline.
Beginning in Fall 2025 and continuing through the foreseeable future, both Training Centers doubled their incoming class sizes—a significant increase designed to immediately boost manpower availability. The Plumbers JATC expanded to 30 apprentices per class, while the Pipefitters JATC increased to 60 apprentices per class, evenly split between Construction and Service. All available seats were filled, and both Centers are now operating at full capacity.
With facilities “bursting at the seams,” labor and management have jointly committed matching funds to pursue the construction or purchase of larger, modernized Training Centers. This investment reflects a unified strategy to support long‑term workforce growth and meet the evolving needs of contractors across Southeast Michigan.
The JATCs’ actions demonstrate a clear, coordinated response to industry demand: expanding class sizes, maximizing enrollment, and investing in the future of the skilled trades.
